1:50 Custom Painted Truck Model — Creative Briefs, and How Far a Livery Can Actually Be Pushed

Almost every brief that lands in our inbox opens the same way: a photograph of a real tractor unit, a container number, and one line — we would like this in 1:50. Then, maybe one enquiry in five, it keeps going. Can the cab be a different shape? Can the paint on a 1:50 custom painted truck model fade from navy to silver along the flank? Could the container carry hand-painted artwork instead of a printed logo?

We build a custom painted truck model for a living, so those are our favourite enquiries. They are also the ones where a vague answer costs somebody money, because "swap the colour" and "reshape the cab" are not two settings of the same job. They sit at opposite ends of a ladder, and the rungs between them are priced very differently. This page is our attempt at drawing that ladder before anyone commits to a bespoke truck model order.

Most "Custom" Truck Models Are Not Custom at All

In this trade, custom has quietly come to mean we will print your logo on a casting we already own. That is a good product, and it is most of what leaves our floor: a bespoke truck model in your colours, with nothing else touched. Made honestly, at a price that works.

Our 1:50 line runs off a family of dies — cab, chassis, container, wheels, fuel tank, mirrors — and the great majority of branded orders are built from that family with fresh artwork on top. Nothing wrong with it. The trouble starts when a client's design language genuinely fights the tooling and nobody says so until the deposit has cleared.

The Customisation Ladder — Five Rungs, Five Different Quotations

Worth reading before you write the brief: where a custom painted truck model lands on this ladder decides everything downstream — tooling cost, sample rounds, minimum quantity, and how much of the price is decoration rather than manufacturing.

Rung

What actually changes

Tooling needed

Sample time

Quantity that makes sense

1

Paint colour and finish only

None — a colour proof on a test panel

~3 working days

20 units up

2

Paint plus printed graphics

One printing screen per colour

~7 working days

200 units up

3

Swapping parts we already own (closed box for open-top, flatbed for tanker barrel)

Existing dies, occasionally one insert

~10 working days

100 units up

4

A new or reshaped part — an unusual fairing, a different cab profile

New die, often with a slide

3–5 weeks

500 units up

5

Original bodywork with no parent on a real truck

A full new tool set

6–10 weeks

1,000 units up

Two things are worth noticing in that table. First, the expensive jump is rung 3 to rung 4, not rung 1 to rung 2 — the opposite of where most buyers brace themselves. Second, quantity and rung travel together. Asking for rung 4 at rung 2 volumes is what makes a quotation look absurd when it is in fact correct. A creative truck model quoted at a number that seems oddly high is usually a project sitting on the wrong rung, not a supplier being greedy.

Paint: What a Spray Gun Can Do That a Printer Cannot

Once the shape is settled, the visual effect you are chasing decides the process. Not the other way round.

Pad printing lays down one flat colour at a time. It is fast, it repeats across thousands, and it cannot produce a gradient. It also cannot follow a surface that changes height, which is why printed markings on a corrugated container break unless the artwork is split across the ridges — a detail that quietly decides how a custom painted truck model gets quoted.

Waterslide decals carry photographic detail — a portrait, a photograph, a multi-colour illustration — far better than any printing plate, and they are the usual answer when a bespoke truck model has to carry a recognisable face. They are thin, and they are only permanent under a clear coat. A decal left without lacquer over it will lift at the edge within a season.

Airbrushing is the only genuine route to a fade, a soft edge or weathering on a creative truck model. It is hand work: a painter doing a two-tone cab measures output in tens of units a day, not thousands. That is the honest reason a hand-painted truck model costs what it does — and it is also why airbrush work is comfortable at 200 pieces and a bottleneck at 2,000. Below that, a hand-painted truck model is priced by the hour, not by the piece.

Hand painting suits the small run carrying a one-off artwork: a portrait on the container flank, a signature, a crest. It is the most expensive decoration we put on a custom shaped truck model, and the one clients most often underestimate.

Laser engraving is monochrome by nature. It cuts into the surface rather than adding colour, so it only reads on bare metal, and it is the wrong tool for anything already painted.

Mixing processes inside a single order moves the whole batch into a different cost band. That is the most common reason a creative truck model quotation comes back higher than expected.

Where the Physics Says No

A short list of requests we have to decline or redirect, so you can plan around them. Every one of them has come up on a real brief, usually after somebody has already promised a date internally.

  • Scale thickness. A real container door panel is a few millimetres of steel. Divided by fifty that is a fraction of a millimetre, and no casting runs that thin. What you see is a correctly shaped thicker part that reads as a panel. It is not a scaled sheet of steel and we will not pretend otherwise.
  • Undercuts without a slide. If a shape would trap the part in the die, we either add a slide or change the shape. There is no third option, and on a custom shaped truck model the slide is often what pushes a project past rung 3.
  • Sink marks. Abruptly thick sections pull the surface down as the alloy cools. Under a bright gloss finish that reads as a dull patch.
  • Parting lines. Move a shape and the parting line moves with it. Sometimes it lands across the roof or down the middle of a door, where it stays visible for the life of a bespoke truck model sitting on a shelf.
  • Assembly order. Any change to a part can invalidate the jig that holds the custom painted truck model during assembly. Jigs are cheap next to dies, but they are not free.

About O.A.S

Shenzhen Ocean Artwork Studio (O.A.S) Technology Co., Ltd. has been building ship and transport models since 2008. Creative briefs are not a side line here: a custom painted truck model is a routine job on this floor rather than an experiment. Alongside our vessel work we have produced branded models for MAERSK, CMA, MSC, SINOTRANS, COSCO, EVERGREEN, YML, TSL, China Merchants Group, CULines, OOCL, WANHAI, ONE and MATSON. The Sinotrans livery shown here is exactly the sort of decoration job this line handles routinely — a house colour that has to survive a curved, glossy surface and still read as the house colour.

If your brief is unusual, send it anyway. We would rather tell you which rung it sits on than have you guess — tell us what you want the custom painted truck model to do, and we will say honestly whether it is rung 1 or rung 5.
